Alzheimer's & Dementia Care
Special Care
Special Care at the Franklin United Methodist Community is designed specifically for residents who have Alzheimer's disease or other related dementia.
The William T. Murphy Special Care was built to meet the needs of those who are in the middle and later stages of this illness. An Advanced Special Care serving 29 residents provides the highest degree of care for those suffering from Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Residents in the end stages of this affliction are often cared for in our well-equipped Health Center.
The goal of all Special Care accommodations is to provide a comfortable home for residents in an environment conducive to independent functioning, while maintaining respect and dignity for the residents.
Unique Features of our Facilities
The Murphy and Advanced Special Care facilities have raised ceilings equipped with skylights to allow for natural lighting throughout the common areas. The resident’s room opens into the common areas. The dining room, activity room and living room are considered the common areas and are located in the center of each facility.
Surrounding the common areas is a walking path that allows the resident to wander/walk around the unit without becoming lost. A walking path is also featured in the secured garden patio in Murphy Special Care that allows access to the outdoors. This courtyard is visible from the nurse’s station, and provides residents and visitors privacy and fresh air during the warmer months.
Other Features
A lovely, secured display case is located outside the door of each resident’s room, allowing for display of personal items or mementos. This case also serves as a visual reminder to help the resident locate his/her own room.
The rooms within each unit are furnished with an electric hospital bed, a bedside table, and an over-the-bed table, a lamp and a chair. Semi-private rooms are designed so that each resident has a window, closet and one half of the room. The two residents share a bathroom.
A nurse’s station is conveniently located within each unit, and allows staff and residents to have frequent visual and personal contacts.
All employees are involved in fulfilling the needs of the residents through activities such as exercise groups, bingo, sing-a-longs, cooking, crafts, card games and other group and individual activities. Families and friends are invited and encouraged to visit and participate in activities with their loved ones. The Beauty Shop, the Chapel and the Family Room are all located nearby and are available for the residents to use.
The staff of the Franklin United Methodist Community is committed to providing the highest quality of care to the resident with dementia. Our Special Care caters to the needs of these individuals through programming, a comfortable environment and the well-designed floor plan. We strive to have the resident and their families feel comfortable and "at home".
